Frequently Asked Questions

A sliding barn door is a type of door that slides along a track instead of opening and closing like a traditional door. It works by gliding along a track that is attached to the wall above the opening.

We manufacture our doors from a variety of materials, including authentic reclaimed wood, solid wood, metal, glass, and even composite materials.

Sliding barn doors can be installed in any room of your home, including bedrooms, bathrooms, living rooms, and kitchens. They are especially popular for use as closet doors, room dividers, and pantry doors.

To measure for a sliding barn door, you’ll need to measure the width and height of the opening where the door will be installed. Be sure to account for any trim or molding around the opening.

A single sliding barn door slides along a track on one side of the opening, while a double sliding barn door has two doors that slide in opposite directions, meeting in the middle.

It is possible to install a sliding barn door yourself if you have the necessary tools and experience. However, it’s best to hire a professional. We strongly recommend hiring a contractor.

A soft-close mechanism is a device that slows down and gently closes the door when it reaches the end of the track. Whether or not you need one for your sliding barn door depends on your personal preference.

To maintain and clean your sliding barn door, wipe it down with a damp cloth or feather duster to remove dust and dirt. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that could damage the door’s finish.

Choose a sliding barn door that is slightly larger than the opening to ensure proper coverage and function. Be sure to measure the opening carefully and account for any trim or molding.

At Urban Woodcraft we offer both standard stock items as well as custom sizes and designs. Please reach out to one of our sales reps to go through the different styles we carry.

Care Instructions

Your new barn door will be the highlight of your room. Here are the best ways to ensure your door stays looking new.

These beautiful doors are best kept dust-free. Using a microfiber cloth, wipe the top and side of the door. Then a good wipe on the front and back of the door, make sure to go with the grains of the door.

If the door has been stained, a light cleaning with furniture polish will restore the shine and finish of the door.

The wide selection of MDF style doors, will have a door to fit perfectly into any space! Keeping this door clean is as easy as 1-2-3. Using a microfiber cloth, wipe the top and side of the door and any paneling details. With a damp cloth and using soapy water – wipe the front and back of the door from top to bottom. Finally wipe with a dry cloth.

Metal doors can completely transform a space but do have a different cleaning routine. Start with a microfiber cloth and wipe the door down completely – removing any dust. With a sponge and all-purpose cleaner – dampen the door. Then wipe the door with the sponge from top to bottom. (If the sponge gets dirty, rinse it clean and spray cleaner)

For doors with glass panels, follow previous instructions for painted or reclaimed wood doors depending on the style of your door. As for the glass, use a non-abrasive glass cleaner. Avoid glass cleaner from coming in contact with the wood parts of door.

These versatile doors take a second to clean! Using a microfiber cloth, dampen it and wipe the door from top to bottom. Don’t forget the top and sides of the door. Avoid using soapy water.

Cleaning and Maintaining the Hardware

Keeping any door as clean and new, the hardware can not be forgotten. A microfiber cloth will do the trick to clean the rollers and rail. For grime that is a little harder to remove, soak a cloth in white vinegar and run it damply along the hardware. If the door starts to squeak when in motion, apply a small amount of olive oil to the rollers.
